The web is a crowded and noisy place, and so standing out can be tough. If you feel you’re struggling, don’t worry. Squarespace’s Cover Pages are a great way of make a real online statement.
A Cover Page is a single page that can exist as part of a bigger site, or on its own. The idea is simple yet powerful: a Cover Page is the summary of your identity or brand. It is, in short, your entire story in one page. When somebody sees it they’ll be left in doubt about who you are, and what you stand for.
Though articulate and impactful, Cover Pages are very easy to make. The process is very similar to that of creating a Squarespace website.
The easy way
There’s one key difference though. Unlike regular Squarespace pages,Cover Pages aren’t built using blocks. They start with a pre-styled layout and use some editing tools to add content.
Cover Pages are then a little more fixed in nature – elements like buttons can’t be move – but this helps keep your page beautiful, simple and responsive. Here’s how to create your Cover Page...
01. Select your template
With Squarespace up and running, your first job is to pick a template. There are loads to choose from, just scroll down until you see one that dovetails with your personal brand and identity.
02. Make the selection
Next, in the Home menu, click pages. You’ll see a list of pages that the template offers. Hover over one and until the cog icon appears. Click it and you’ll be presented with a new menu of options.
Scroll down to the bottom of the new window that’s appeared at the right hand side of the screen and click Set As Homepage.
Finally, when you’re prompted, click Confirm.
03. Add a banner image
A banner is the epicentre of your page. When you’re in the configure page menu simply drag and drop your image into the Thumbnail Image box. The image will be uploaded and placed onto your page. It’s that simple.
04. Aim for perfection
If you’re unhappy with an aspect of your image don’t worry. UseSquarespace’s inbuilt image edit tools. They’re powerful, simple to use and – with the image uploaded – they’ll let you edit the image online. This means you don’t need to keep dropping back to Photoshop and re-uploading.
05. Remove links
The simplest type of Home Page is a simple, flat page with few external links. Templates often have navigation elements included. These are easy to remove and adjust.
In the left hand panel, just hover over elements you don’t want and
06. Make a logo
A logo is a great way of communicating your mission and personality. If you don’t have one, don’t worry.
Squarespace packs a handy logo creator tool. Under the Logo Image box, click Create a New Logo.
When you’re prompted enter your name or that of your company. You can then add a tag line, an icon and, when you’re happy, save your logo.
Back in the home menu you can upload your logo. The easiest way to do this is to simply drag the file into the box under Logo Image.
07. Add content
Like most thing in Squarespace, adding content is just a matter of filling in the boxes. Our template has a space for explanatory content. Yours may not. If yours does, just click, edit and type.
